COVID-19 has been especially hard on people in aged care. One way to improve their lives is to use virtual and augmented reality technology, which allows them to break through the barriers of isolation to leave the four walls of their home.
Transforming Aged Care with Virtual Reality (VR)
Virtual Reality (VR) creates immersive and meaningful experiences for aged care residents. It lets them reconnect with treasured memories (such as revisiting their honeymoon), check off bucket-list activities (like bungee-jumping or skydiving), or travel to the four corners of the earth in ways they never thought possible due to mobility or health problems.
This project will integrate VR technologies into six Australian aged care facilities to improve social connections between residents, staff, and their families; and to provide aged care residents with creative, novel and intellectually-stimulating leisure activities – ensuring daily life is exciting, rather than mundane and monotonous.
At the School of Design, the “Transforming Aged Care with Virtual Reality (VR) Project” has enabled QUT researchers to use technology to allow residents the chance to revisit their past and explore new worlds.
This project has improved lives – at a time of great isolation with the pandemic – bringing joy to aged care residents, stimulating memories and fostering social connections.
It can cost as little as $600 to get this incredible technology into aged care facilities. Your donation will help the research team extend the reach of this project by providing VR technology to more facilities around Australia.
