Professor Brian Schmidt AC
Meet Australia’s Nobel Laureate and astrophysicist Professor Brian Schmidt AC who will describe the privilege of being an astronomer during a time of intense change in which researchers have literally uncovered most of the key elements of our place in the Universe. Brian will reflect on his own academic journey, the progress of astronomy as a field and what we can expect in the future.
About the speaker
Professor Brian Schmidt is one of Australia's most eminent scientists winning the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics, alongside many other academic awards and distinctions. Professor Schmidt has spent most of his academic career as an astrophysicist at the Australian National University before becoming Vice-Chancellor in 2015. He makes a significant contribution to public debate through the media, and his membership of bodies including the Prime Minister's National Science and Technology Council. Under his leadership, his research team made the startling discovery that the expansion rate of the Universe is accelerating. Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, The United States Academy of Science, and the Royal Society, he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2013.
