Looking back on 2022

Dear QUT graduate

Welcome to the final edition of the alumni newsletter for 2022. As the Director of Alumni and Corporate Events at QUT, it has been wonderful to deliver a newly formatted newsletter this year, inspired by the rich landscape of learning and research at QUT and led by wonderful alumni guest editors.

This month, we look back at the year that was, from a turbulent start of the year with the ongoing impact of the pandemic and floods that closed Gardens Point campus, to today when we can celebrate 2022 as a year of renewal and resilience.

This year we heard from 40 of your peers and celebrated their ongoing journeys in newsletters; we have congratulated over 47 alumni whose excellence has been recognised by their industry or professions; and we recently welcomed 11 alumni as our newest Outstanding Alumni Award recipients.

Despite the pervasive influence of the pandemic, QUT has powered forward with research this year and secured highly competitive funding, infrastructure, and commercialisation investment; ranking 3rd in the Young University Australian list and equal 193rd in the 2022 THE World University Rankings. QUT’s game changing Campus to Country strategy, which outlines the significance of the land on which QUT sits and the importance of connecting to Country, won the 2022 Minister’s Award for Urban Design; and QUT’s ongoing commitment to sustainability has been recognised by being positioned in the top 100 for sustainability in world university rankings. This has also been an exciting year for partnerships including the extension of QUT’s ongoing relationship with BMW Germany via the installation of their M8 Coupe at the Design Academy on Kelvin Grove campus, and the announcement of a $3 million partnership with Cisco via QUT’s Centre for Future Enterprise.

As the year closes, we look forward to welcoming over 10,000 new graduates across 51 graduation ceremonies to our alumni network which is now an esteemed group of over 285,000 global professionals. As part of this wonderful “club”, we hope that they continue to stay connected with QUT and with their peers across the world. One way to keep connected is via this newsletter, which has been opened by you and your colleagues over 300,000 times this year! If you have some ideas about how we can improve the newsletter or what we should include, we welcome your feedback via this survey.

Please enjoy this final edition of our newsletter for 2022. Here’s to the year that was, and we look forward to reconnecting in the new year!

Kind regards
