The Art of Modern Leadership
Welcome to the March edition of the Alumni eNews focused on the topic of what it means to be a modern leader.
When we think of leaders, we often think of those in positions of power: political leaders or business titans. The cost of thinking of leaders as being part of a narrow group in a formal, traditional way is that it limits our sense of whether we see ourselves as leaders too.
Whether you are the head of one of the largest companies in the world, supervising a small team or guiding your family, you are a leader and it will be your ability to integrate your head and heart that will influence your success in leading others and navigating our complex world.
Thankfully, our notion of leadership in recent years has been probed, challenged, and flipped on its head. Increasingly, people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, who might never consider themselves ‘leaders’ in a formal sense are emerging from trying and uncertain circumstances to lead with impact and influence. Modern leaders who understand leadership is a privilege and not an entitlement are leaving an outsized impact on our world.
So, what practical steps can you take to discover the type of leader you are or aspire to be? Modern leaders know they are continually rethinking and reshaping the best way they can in any given moment; they understand their limitations. They understand there is always much more learning to be done.
You can follow their example by reading widely, volunteering or mentoring in your community and embracing self-directed learning. Another option is further study, such as QUT’s popular MBA and Executive MBA programs, which not only compel you to reflect on your interpretation of leadership, but elevate the conversation and expose you to a myriad of other views from a diverse cohort.
And of course, you can explore the alumni profiles, events, programs and other resources included in this newsletter to inspire you on the next step of your leadership journey.
QUT is well placed to support you on this quest, with a long history of encouraging critical dialogue on the challenges and changing nature of leadership – from their renowned QUT Business Leaders Forum showcasing world-class thinkers, to recognising and retelling the stories of achievement of inductees in the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame in partnership with the State Library of Queensland.
Leadership is simply a series of moments, and every moment gives you the opportunity to leave a positive legacy for those you lead.
What will your legacy be?
